We are thrilled to reimagine our traditional library space by opening this fall with our new Nate Mack STEM Library Learning Commons. Typically, libraries have served as both an archive of recorded knowledge, as well as a locus of knowledge. Information is no longer confined to printed materials, available only in a physical location.
We are reinventing ourselves as a 21st Century community hub of learning. In the past, the library was "like a store, a place to 'get stuff'." We have expanded this space to also be a place like a kitchen, where we "make stuff." Our goal is to help our community access and consume information, both physically and digitally, for their futures. We will also be a place for our community to collaborate, construct, and apply the information they are consuming.
"Printed books still play a critical role in supporting learners, but digital technologies offer additional pathways to learning and content acquisition. Students, parents, and teachers no longer need a library simply for access. Instead, they require a place that encourages participatory learning and allows for co-construction of understanding from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming learning commons" (excerpt from article 21st Century Libraries: the Learning Commons, by Beth Holland, Johns Hopkins University).
Our goal is for the STEM Library Learning Commons to be a hub of learning for our entire community: students, parents, and teachers. We will come together in groups to collaborate, barrier-free, and learn about innovations we are passionate about. "We want to interact with the content, the technology, the space, and each other to gain context and increase our knowledge" (Holland).
As you walk in this school year, you will see many changes to our space, physically and philosophically. With the addition of a green screen center, epic Lego space, magnetic pipeline (coming soon), and maker-spaces, students, parents, and teachers will have places to make, read, play, design, code, film movies, engineer, and learn collaboratively, as a community.
After-school events and clubs will be offered for a variety of age groups. From Book Beasts to our Maker-space Series, from Stop Animation/Green Screen to our State Championship Robotics Team, there will be something for everyone... and be sure to stay tuned for our Accelerated Reader (AR) Launch this year, as well!
We welcome you to visit our new STEM Library Learning Commons, and to be an active part of this culture of learning together!
